ONE BIG THING: INSIDE SAFE COMES TO HOLLYWOOD

What Happened?

This week, our office successfully placed over 30 people in hotel/motel rooms and on the pathway to permanent housing by working with Mayor Bass, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and trusted service providers.

Why it Matters

The encampment had been at El Centro Ave near Hollywood Blvd for several years, and addressing it has been a top priority for our office in partnership with Hollywood residents and local businesses.

Thanks to our careful planning and coordination, the folks who were living at the encampment will now have a roof over their heads, their own rooms, caseworkers, mental health/substance abuse treatment, and more critical services.

What's Next?

We still have so much work to do to solve our homelessness crisis. Thankfully, the new LA City Budget includes $1.3 billion to combat the homelessness crisis, including $250 million for Inside Safe, to speed up our progress and bring more Inside Safe operations to CD13.

As we push forward, we will continue to look for every opportunity to expand interim and permanent housing in our district, along with mental health/drug addiction treatment as we take the care-centered and services-oriented approach needed to truly fix this issue.

A Few More Quick Hits!

1. Sanctuary City Motion Passes Through City Council!

The motion we introduced with Councilmembers Nithya Raman and Eunisses Hernandez to make Los Angeles a true Sanctuary City passed unanimously through City Council! That means that the City Attorney will now prepare an ordinance (aka a law) for council to vote on, and if we can pass it, the protections will officially be implemented!

One in ten Angelenos are undocumented, and this community needs to be able to trust the government and access critical services just like anyone else. As immigrants across the country are facing increasing attacks from Republicans trying to use them as political pawns, it’s more important than ever to codify protections for our neighbors and ensure that Los Angeles is a true Sanctuary City.

2. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 Pride Village & LA Pride Parade 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

We're so excited to host the 2023 LA Pride Parade in our district this Sunday at 11am!!!

Along with the Pride Parade comes the amazing Pride Village from 12pm-8pm – a free street fair with food, activities, live performances, and more. Special thanks to the Hollywood Partnership, LA Pride, and all the amazing people who are organizing these events!

3. Hollywood Fringe Festival

On Wednesday, we joined the opening night of this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. From now until June 25, artists from LA and across the country will be all over venues in Hollywood celebrating the performing arts and the community that artists build.

We hope you can check it out!

4. Drag Queen Storytime in Atwater

Our team was so happy to join Pickle the Drag Queen and Idina Menzel on Tuesday for Drag Queen Storytime at Atwater Library. It was such a joyous event filled with family fun and so many smiling faces.

As anti-LGBTQ+ hate rears its ugly head across LA in Glendale, the Valley, and beyond, we must stand strong and support our shared values of inclusion, love, and acceptance. CD13 has been a refuge for the LGBTQ+ community and queer youth for decades, and it will stay that way.

Today and everyday -- LA is for everyone!

5. Tupac Honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

This Wednesday, we were able to honor the legendary artist Tupac Shakur with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Tupac’s legacy left such a massive mark on this city, and as someone who grew up in South Central in the 90s, his music means so much to me personally. It was truly incredible to share the moment with Tupac’s family and friends.
