ONE BIG THING: RENT DEBT DEADLINE APPROACHING AUGUST 1

What’s the deadline?

Rent owed from March 1, 2020 - September 30, 2021 is due on August 1. If more than one month’s rent is still unpaid after the deadline, landlords are legally allowed to begin the eviction process.

Why it matters

We’re already seeing record numbers of evictions as rents and cost of living continues to skyrocket across LA. If folks can’t afford to pay their back rent by August 1, we could see even more families forced out of their homes and onto the streets, worsening our homelessness crisis.

What do I do if I may be facing eviction?

Visit bit.ly/larenterhelp to access Renter Resources like legal help, instructions on how to respond to an eviction notice, and first steps toward preparing a legal defense.

You can also sign up for a webinar hosted by LA’s Housing Department so you can know your rights and options if you think you may be vulnerable to eviction.

What can I do to help others?

Print and post the flyers below in your building. 

Check in on your neighbors so they know their rights.

What else can the city do?

The Mayor’s Office and Councilmember Nithya Raman proposed utilizing Measure ULA dollars to fund rental assistance programs. This plan will come before the City Council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee on August 2nd, and to the full City Council soon after. These proposed expenditures include:

• $18.4 million for a Short Term Emergency Assistance Program that will allow eligible low-income tenant households to apply for up to six months owed back rent due to an economic hardship.
• $23 million for the Eviction Defense/Prevention program, to continue and expand the Stay Housed LA legal support and education program.
• $11.2 million for a Protections from Tenant Harassment program.
• $5.5 million for a Tenant Outreach and Education program and campaign to provide broad and targeted tenant education outreach services, including workshops, legal clinics, paid and earned media, and targeted social media.

The bottom line is that our housing problem is not going away anytime soon, and we need to take urgent action if we want to prevent our homelessness crisis from spiraling further. In the coming weeks and months, our team is committed to working with our city partners and outside advocates to keep people in their homes and off the streets.
