Inside Safe in CD13

ONE BIG THING: OVER 100 UNHOUSED RESIDENTS CONNECTED WITH HOUSING & SERVICES

What Happened

On Wednesday and Thursday, our office worked with the Mayor, City partners, and trusted service providers on an Inside Safe operation in Historic Filipinotown and Rampart Village that brought over 100 unhoused residents off the streets and into housing.

Our care-centered approach led to a 100% acceptance rate of services at the encampment by the middle school, showing that when we meet our unhoused neighbors with real services and housing options, they are overwhelmingly ready to accept that help so they can get back on their feet.

Why it Matters

For months, our homelessness team has been working with community organizations and trusted service providers to build trust with encampment residents and line up services and housing options so we could bring folks inside.

Since a significant part of this encampment was near a middle school, this was an especially sensitive area. It was a months-long process that required more patience than any of us would have liked – but instead of sweeping tents from block to block just for the encampments to return, we focused on a sustainable, permanent solution.

2. Legislation to Hold Bad Landlords Accountable

LA’s had programs (called REAP and SCEP) in place to hold bad landlords accountable for a longtime, but just like a lot of things in this city, the implementation of these programs hasn’t lived up to their intent.

This week, we introduced motions with Councilmembers Nithya Raman and Eunisses Hernandez to look at overhauling these programs so they can actually serve the renters they are supposed to help, instead of allowing bad landlords to get off the hook when they refuse to make repairs, and let their units become uninhabitable.

Stay tuned for more updates here as this process gets underway!
