Update Fletcher Drive Streetscape Project

Young individuals working together to clean up a local park

As many of you have already noticed, work is well underway on the Fletcher Streetscape Project in Glassell Park. The project will not only beautify the area; it will make for a safer environment for children walking to school, and for the increasing number of bicyclists who ride through this corridor. Commuters traveling through the area will experience some temporary inconveniences due to the improvements we are making, however this is an exciting time for the community watching our street transform and reach its full potential.

If you were unable to attend any of the five community forums that we conducted over the last three years about the improvements, let me explain that the current striping and parking restrictions are temporary. A landscaped center median will be installed and a buffer zone is required so crews can work safely. Once completed, the project will include two lanes of traffic (one in each direction), two bike lanes (one in each direction), two landscaped medians, and keep the majority of parking on both sides of Fletcher Drive. Crews will complete work on the hardscape in November 2016, and start landscaping by the end of the year.

The scope of the project includes: sidewalk rehabilitation, installation of 19 access ramps, repairing curbs, and creating two landscaped medians with an automated irrigation system. The project also calls for 140 new street trees (all have been planted), four benches, four trash receptacles and a new bike path which will create a much needed connection to the network of bike lanes along Eagle Rock Boulevard. In addition, the plans also call for a left turn lane at Estara Avenue leading into the schools and surrounding community.

This is just one of several streetscape projects completed and/or planned for the 13th District. We already dedicated the Sunset Junction Streetscape, the Sunset Boulevard Streetscape in Echo Park, and the Micheltorena Safe Routes to School Streetscape in Silver Lake. My office is currently finalizing plans for the Western Avenue Streetscape in East Hollywood. Public safety is a number one concern of mine, and working to improve the look and feel of our neighborhoods while improving how we safely navigate them has been a top priority.

I would like to thank you in advance for your patience during the construction process. I promise the end result will be a wonderful improvement to the neighborhood! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to my Field Deputy, Hector Vega, with my office via telephone at 213-207-3019 or email at hector.vega@lacity.org.

Best Regards,

Councilmember, 13th District
