ONE BIG THING: PREPARING FOR HURRICANE HILARY

As you’ve probably heard by now, Hurricane Hilary is approaching California, and SoCal is under its first Tropical Storm Watch ever. To keep stay safe during the storm, utilize the following resources:

• Updates from LA’s Emergency Management Department

• Safety tips from the National Hurricane Center

• Register for NotifyLA for emergency alerts

• Report power outages to LADWP here

• Call 9-1-1 to report any life-threatening emergencies

• Report fallen trees and non-emergency storm impacts at lacity.gov/myla311, the 311 app, or by dialing 3-1-1

• Find sandbags to divert water if your home is at risk of flooding

We are ready to mobilize city, county, state, and federal resources to mitigate the impact of this unprecedented storm, but the best thing you can do is to be prepared, and check in on your vulnerable neighbors to make sure they’re prepared too.

1. Advancing an Equitable Plan for Street Vendors

Yesterday as Chair of the Civil Rights Committee, we advanced a report which recommends a more just fee schedule for street vendors in LA. Previously, the city forced hardworking families to pay unreasonably high fees in order to operate their small business, but thanks to an effort led by Councilmember Nithya Raman, a city report found that we can reduce the fee from $541 to just $27.51.

Next, this report will go to the Neighborhood Empowerment and Public Works Committees before heading to the full City Council for a vote. Then, the City Attorney will prepare the ordinance for council’s final approval before it officially becomes law.
