New Emergency Shelter in the 13th District

City Hall
Friends,

This week, another facility in the 13th District opened as a temporary emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness.

Shatto Recreation Center in Koreatown is providing 46 shelter beds, while also featuring rapid COVID-19 testing for those staying at this site. Recently, the Hollywood Recreation Center also opened its doors as an emergency shelter, with 27 beds.

These temporary shelters are part of Mayor Garcetti’s COVID-19 Emergency Order to ensure that those experiencing homelessness are brought into a safer environment during the coronavirus pandemic. At this time, the City has 23 recreation centers providing 974 beds.

Additionally, the 13th District is home to two bridge housing sites in Hollywood with a total of 200 beds (Schrader and YWCA), and 50 beds providing temporary shelter (Salvation Army) for transition age youth (18 to 24 years old).

People living in tents and unsanitary conditions are at greater risk for disease under normal conditions. Bringing people indoors is a safer environment to receive services.

By definition, the homelessness crisis is a public health crisis. Establishing a robust inventory of shelter space and permanent supportive housing is something I have been working on for years and will continue to do so both during, and long after the pandemic eases.

Stay safe this weekend,

MITCH O’FARRELL
