COVID-19 Update: Virtual Info Session on Unemployment Benefits

City Hall
Friends,

My office is partnering with the City’s Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD) to host a virtual information session on Unemployment Benefits. The presentation will be offered in both English and Spanish.

The events will take place on Thursday, April 30th from 2:00pm to 3:00pm (Spanish) and Friday, May 1st from 10:00am to 11:00am (English). These orientation sessions are designed for Angelenos who have been furloughed, laid off, or seen their hours reduced since the Safer at Home emergency order went into effect.

This free information session will provide details on how to access unemployment services and resources as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. RSVP for either of these orientation sessions by submitting this Google form here. Access the virtual orientation packet by clicking here.

As always, my office is available during the COVID-19 pandemic Safer at Home orders should you have any questions. Please call 213-207-3015 or email councilmember.ofarrell@lacity.org to reach a member of the team.

Stay safe,

MITCH O’FARRELL

PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE

LOS ANGELES - As part of the federal CARES Act, the new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program helps unemployed Californians who are business owners, self-employed workers, independent contractors, and others not usually eligible for regular state benefits. The program provides assistance for those who are out of work, or whose services are significantly reduced as a direct result of the pandemic.

ENHANCING STREET SAFETY

SILVER LAKE - Over the weekend, StreetsLA completed a concrete repair project on West Silver Lake Dr near the reservoir. This work helped to improve the safety for all users of the roadway. StreetsLA will continue to make improvements in the 13th District on some weekends in the near future.

'HOUSE ARREST MY WILD GARDEN'

ATWATER VILLAGE - Local resident Marylou Watkins shared this original poem, inspired by the Safer at Home order. This serves as a reminder to stay home as we seek to bring an end to the pandemic.

House Arrest My Wild Garden
In my wild, unkept garden, the wild sweet peas grow
Shimmering in the early breeze, in the early sunlit glow
Planted, then forgotten, seeds from a single pack
Multiplying as the years pass by, always coming back
Tall and proud, after a winter’s sleep, lavender framed in green.
Beckoning us to the great outside, wanting to be seen.
But this is our time to lay in wait
This is our time to hibernate.
This is our time to  stay inside
This is our time to learn to hide.
While the virus tries, but cannot find a  willing human host
Every day we watch the numbers as we eat our morning toast
Every day we tell ourselves  we are going to win this fight
Then all of us can be together, smiling  in the joyous light.

-Marylou Watkins
