COVID-19 Update: Tenant Protections During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Friends,

It’s April 1st and the rent is due - a sentence I know is on everyone’s mind as this COVID-19 pandemic and emergency precautions continue to impact life for all Angelenos.

According to reports, $50 billion in rent is due today nationwide. Here in Los Angeles, I want to reassure residential and commercial tenants that if you are unable to pay your rent because of circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, you are protected.

My colleagues and I approved an emergency ordinance last week that provides protections for tenants while emergency orders are in place and beyond. We went even further than the Mayor’s initial order by voting unanimously to: waive late fees; prohibit evictions for additional tenants and guests; and extend the rent payback period to 12 months for residential tenants (three months for commercial), interest free. The ordinance pertains to all Angelenos, regardless of immigration status. The Mayor also announced a freeze on rent increases in all Rent Stabilized units.

My office is receiving lots of questions about the protections:
  • Do the City’s eviction protections pertain to all tenants?
  • Does this mean tenants don’t have to pay their rent?
  • What if I received a notice to ‘Pay or Quit?’
  • What if I can’t pay my rent?

The City's Housing + Community Investment Department is here to help renters in Los Angeles who have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information and answers to these frequently asked questions, please visit the department's website by clicking here. There is also a hotline to call, and that information is below.

Stay safe,

MITCH O’FARRELL

SILVER LAKE STREET RESURFACING

SILVER LAKE - Crews with the City’s Bureau of Street Services (BSS) recently resurfaced a deteriorated alley at Benton Way and Lafayette Place. The project was a collaboration between Councilmember O'Farrell, a nearby resident, and BSS. The newly improved alley is now safer for pedestrians who use it as an accessible path to walk to nearby shops.
