COVID-19 Update: State Assistance for Immigrants in Los Angeles

City Hall

Friends,

Today, Governor Newsom announced several initiatives to ensure support for workers in Los Angeles and across the state impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These initiatives include:

  • Expanding call center hours at the Employment Development Department to better assist Californians with unemployment insurance applications
  • The creation of a one-stop shop for those applying for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, including the self-employed and independent contractors
  • $75 million in statewide Disaster Relief Assistance funding to provide financial support for immigrant workers
  • Commitment from philanthropic partners to raise an additional $50 million to support undocumented Californians
  • Directing the Employment Development Department to expedite access to the Work Share program to avert layoffs

I am proud to represent the most diverse Council District in Los Angeles, whether you were born here or come from somewhere else. We are all in this together. I applaud the Governor’s actions today, and look forward to the City Council approving my initiative, co-presented by Council President Nury Martinez and Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, aimed at ensuring that the City maximizes help for immigrant and undocumented residents (motion: here).

A copy of the Governor’s executive order can be found here, and you can learn more about the state’s ongoing COVID-19 response efforts here.

Please stay safe,

MITCH O’FARRELL
