COVID-19 Update: Eviction protections and mortgage forbearance

City Hall
Friends,

Last week, I sent a letter to House and Senate Leaders in Washington, urging for even further protections for all Angelenos during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. I am calling on Congress to provide a federal plan for rent and mortgage forgiveness as part of the next federal relief bill.

Tens of thousands of Angelenos have lost their ability to pay rent due to their income evaporating. And conversely, many rental property owners in Los Angeles have mortgages that rely on that income to meet the obligations of their loan, pay property taxes, and other related expenses.

The City Council took action to provide eviction protection to renters dealing with coronavirus.  These protections include: barring landlords from evicting residential and commercial tenants who are unable to pay rent; allowing tenants to pay back their rent for up to 12 months after the emergency order is lifted; and waiving late fees.  For more information on these eviction protections, click here

Additionally, the Federal Housing Finance Agency has announced that it will allow forbearance to mortgage holders who are experiencing a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  For more information, check out the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s website here.

Finally, I want to let you know the Council President has scheduled the next City Council meeting for Tuesday, April 7, 10 a.m. The meeting will be broadcast live via video conferencing and can be viewed on Channel 35.

Members of the public who wish to offer public comment on one of the agenda items should call (669) 900-6833 and use Meeting ID No.459 499 150 and then press #. Press # again when prompted for participant ID. You may also submit written comments at LACouncilComment.com.

Please stay safe,
