Cooling Centers in the 13th District

Echo Park Betsy M Hall

As the National Weather Service is forecasting a steady climb in temperature over the next week as we begin to enter the summer season, I want to remind you of the City facilities offering cooling centers made available to escape the heat.

The following Recreation and Parks facilities in the 13th District are open to the public and serve as cooling centers during  their normal hours of operation:

Bellevue Recreation Center

826 Lucile Avenue

Monday - Friday: 10:00 am - 9:00 pm

Saturday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Glassell Park Recreation Center Complex

3704 Verdugo Road

Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Yucca Community Center

6671 Yucca Street

Monday - Friday: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Saturday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Los Angeles Central Library and all LA Library branches serve as cooling centers during normal hours of operation. Stop by and enjoy a book, or browse the internet, while you take a break from summer heat. A list of library branches near you can be found here.

Los Angeles Animal Services has a list of tips and suggestions on its website that will offer ways to minimize the impact of the heat on your furry companions.

In addition, please be sure to take the necessary precautions to protect your family and conserve energy at home, as long as it does not jeopardize your health. In an effort to help reduce energy use, LADWP recommends the following conservation tips: adjust your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher; turn off unnecessary lights; adjust your water heater to 120 degrees; use major appliances early in the morning or late at night; and turn off your pool pumps.
