ECHO PARK - Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell worked with our community partners to provide 100 local students with a free refurbished desktop computer and a mobile hotspot during a distribution event last Monday.
The OurcycleLA program provides thousands of computers formerly used by the City to low-income families for free while also minimizing the city's electronic waste footprint.
Each computer comes with a mobile hotspot and free internet service for four years. Councilmember O’Farrell is funding this service, in partnership with Sprint’s ConnectED program.
The OurcycleLA program is possible due to legislative action by the Los Angeles City Council. OurcycleLA highlights include: 2,500 salvage computers have been refurbished; over 3,200 computer systems have been properly de-manufactured and recycled; up to 100 youths have been trained on refurbishing tasks and software/hardware configuration work; and 10 temporary and full-time jobs have been created for this program.
