During his first term in office, Councilmember O’Farrell has worked to bring more jobs to the 13th District, strengthen the economy, and make it easier for our locally owned mom-and-pop businesses to thrive in the City of Los Angeles.
Here are some highlights on job creation and the economy:
-O’Farrell announced his ‘Open For Business’ reform initiative which will streamline the way entrepreneurs obtain permits, cut the bureaucratic red tape associated with opening a business, and reduce the upfront costs for operators to open their doors.
-Serves as the Chair of the Entertainment and Facilities committee, which has worked to streamline the filming permit process in Los Angeles.
-In support of live theater, O’Farrell recently proclaimed the official designation of “Hollywood Theatre Row” - a hub of creative energy along Santa Monica Boulevard that contributes positively not just to the local culture, but to the local economy as well.
-O’Farrell has supported the construction of more than 900 affordable housing units in the 13th District since he was sworn into office, and negotiated dozens of others through the City Planning process. The construction of these mixed-use projects provide hundreds of good-paying jobs, as well as hundreds more with the opening of ground floor retail at many of these finished locations, helping to support a local, thriving economy.
-O’Farrell contracts with the LA Conservation Corps to hire at-risk youth to provide clean-up and beautification services in Council District 13. For many Corps members, it is often their first employment opportunity.
-O’Farrell supported the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring (“Ban the Box”) Ordinance.
-The Councilmember contracts with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps to hire at-risk youth to serve on two Clean Teams for the 13th District. The crews provide beautification services such as bulky item and debris removal, and tree trimming.
